Global Justice and Inter-cultural Dialogues

The International Conference on Global Justice and Inter-Cultural Dialogues is to be held in East China Normal University, Shanghai, starting on Thursday, January 8 and ending on Monday, January 12, 2004. The conference is jointly sponsored by the Institute for Modern Chinese Thought and Culture Studies at East China Normal University, China, the Carnegie Council for Ethics and International Affairs, the USA, and the Center for the Study of the Sciences and the Humanities at the University of Bergen, Norway.

Topics to be discussed include: the necessity and possibility of cross-cultural political consensuses; concepts such as justice and human rights in different cultures’ perspectives; conceptions of and arguments for global justice in various traditions of political philosophy; nationalism, sovereign states and contemporary world; major cultural traditions and their implications for the enterprise of global justice; “global justice” and “global ethics”; global problems and local problems in the process of globalization; multi-culturalism inside and outside the boundaries of nation-states; NGOs and civil societies in the age of globalization. Suggestions concerning more topics relevant to the theme of the conference are warmly welcomed.

Invited lectures, symposia and workshops will be held on the above-mentioned and other relevant topics. In order to have better reviews and discussions, all the papers for the conference will be circulated in advance. Also for that purpose we are going to set up a conference website, containing more published materials and practical messages. Therefore you are kindly asked to send to us the abstract of your before October 30, 2003, and the manuscript of your paper before November 30. The Conference languages are Chinese and English.

The Conference will be held in the Shao Building, a newly completed and nicely equipped conference centre on the scenic campus of ECNU. We can also help with arrangements if any participant wants to live elsewhere in Shanghai.
