More specifically, what does it mean to collapse epistemological problems into ontological ones?

Epistemology is more about how we acquire knowledge, and what that knowledge is based upon (justified true belief). Ontology is understanding of existence, or being.
Collpasing epistemological problems into ontological problems, it would seem, asks whether broad questions regarding ontological problems can be comprehended by the human mind, and whether questions regarding existence can be conquered by epistemological reasoning.
